So I havent posted in a while, mainly because ive been moving house and also playing more than ever, Ive been running good so its encouraging me to play more. Ive had some more poker coaching with my poker coach reviewing my playing style by analysing a video of me playing online. Its given me more confidence to my game, and ive been very happy with my last 30days. See below.

In other news, full tilt poker have introduced the new rush poker games to low stakes, such an innovative idea, and pretty good fun too. So much so, ive been playing low stakes all week, donking around on the rush tables. Ive been averaging 1400 hands an hour which is pretty nuts. My average was about 600 when I was 8 tabling medium stakes. Anyway, the net result of playing at these low stakes is that ive decided to publish an ebook on how to beat these rush games, seriously, some of the plays ive seen are so so bad, so I thought I’d offer up the solution to these games in one easy package.

Anyway, as I said above, I’ve been running well lately, life is good…

Biggest poker lesson I will ever pass on is to always always play poker when the yanks have a public holiday. For the last two nights ive never seen anything like it, just pure donators on every single table. It takes me back to 2003 when nobody online knew what they were doing, and basically even in the high stakes games player’s understanding of the game wasn’t a patch on what it is today. Net result is I’ve made a couple of K over the last two sessions which is good obviously, and im planning a big session tonight when I get home from work. Hopefully I will have an awesome graph to post in a few days.

Anyways, happy holidays to all you Americans out there, and for anyone else, I suggest you log-on. Hahahaha.

The most important poker lesson I ever learnt was that of bankroll management. In fact, I pride myself on my ability to not play in games that are beyond my means, its all about the discipline. Given this, its just amazing for me to see whats going on in the online poker world over the last month. Yup, isildur1 is at it again, and once again, the largest pot in online poker history has been broken, this time the pot totalled $1,356,947, that’s right, $1.3m in a single hand of poker. No one knows who isildur1 is, all we know is he’s scandanavian, and well, he must have an incredibly deep bankroll, or is just plain fearless (read as stupid).

It will be interesting to see how all this pans out, so far, overall this month, isildur1 is up about $4m, but how long can this continue? Is this just a case of player’s egos getting in the way of disciplined bankroll management? Who knows. All I know is that is damn good fun to see these pots go down. In the words of Phil Mitchell, ‘I raise you the Vic’. Hahaha.

Talking of private poker games, Im trying to wrangle a seat at a private cash game running this Thurs. Its at some private members bar in Bank, and basically, it’s a bunch of traders in the city, with too much cash, and not enough ability. Im hoping to bag the last seat, although, my mate hasn’t fixed me up yet. If I play, it will be a £10/£20 cash game with a £2500 buy-in. Hopefully this should be rich pickings.

The donator being ‘Isildur1′ who, as mentioned a few days ago on a previous poker post, has recently been tearing into Tom Dwan playing in some ridiculous high stakes games and winning around $3m in 2 weeks, so I think he can afford to drop half a mil’ in a hand – lol.

The full write up of the hand can be seen below.

The last few weeks online have simply been nuts, im not sure how long this will continue, no-one has an infinite bankroll. Stay tuned!

About 2 weeks ago, I had a minor downswing at $2/$4, nothing major, and well within my bankroll limits, however, I decided to step down a limit to freshen up my game, and generally build some confidence back. I think this is key, given there is such a fine line in poker between thinking you’re unstoppable, versus expecting to lose every single pot you play.

My poker coach and I decided to set a 20buy-in challenge, i.e. play at $1/$2 until I win 20buy-ins ($4k). That was 2 weeks ago, and im pleased to say, ive achieved my target. See the graph below.

I’m happy with how the last 2 weeks went, and my confidence is now sky high again, and I feel ready to crush the $2/$4 games. I also think it shows how important it is to not let pride get in the way, and thinking you’re too good to play at any given limit. Plus, its profit banked, versus what could have been another 2 weeks playing bad and losing in the higher games. It’s basically the difference between being a winning player, and a breakeven/losing player. Lets hope $2/$4 serves me well over the next few weeks.

In other news, I played in some FTOPS event on Full Tilt Poker with like a gazillion runners, I lasted about 5 hours and busted in the midfield AQ<99 blind versus blind. Again, I don’t know how you tournament players do it…

There is a poker million qualifier on Full Tilt on Sunday, im planning on shipping that and busting James in the final. That would be some serious run good. Hahaha.

So, the online poker world has quite simply gone crazy this week, high stakes poker player durrrr has got action from some lunatic swede called isildur1. To cut to the chase, isildur1 is up about $2.7m for the month, most of which coming from durrrr. These guys are 6 tabling $500/$1000 which is just nuts. Durrrr does not seem to want to walk away, so who knows what will happen for the rest of the month – one thing for sure, is that it makes a $4k downswing a whole lot less painful!

The WSOP is over for another year, unlucky for James, he busted out first, but still massive props for bagging the $1m. Havent watched it yet, but sounds like the winner Joe Cada just went on a massive heater on the final table, sick life.

As for me, I played the £80k guaranteed at DTD last weekend, busted half way through losing a flip, although was basically card dead for 8 hours, so meh. Decided to win my buy-in back on the cash games, within 10mins I was looking at a £750 pot with me being a 2to1 favourite versus some old dudes draw. Obv he gets there on the river. Standard. Drove home in a huff, and just grinded it all back online in half the time. I don’t know how you live players do it.

Hopefully will get some volume in this weekend, although, off to watch Harry Brown tonight, and playing golf Sunday, so probably unlikely. As always, GL at the tables.

Ive decided im due a big score in a tournament, so looks like I will be heading to Dusk till Dawn this weekend to play in their £100k guaranteed. With a buy-in of just £300, its not particularly a cost effective use of my time, but playing in live tournaments has other benefits such as the entertainment value of watching some truly bad players thinking they are Phil Ivey, whilst educating the table about how good they are.

Ive played this tournament once before, and went out to a guy who thought he had the nuts on a KT2 flop when he held KT. Fair enough he’s going to lose a few chips on that flop, but he was genuinely shocked to see my set of 2’s. Needless to say my set didn’t hold up, and I had a long motorway trip home wondering how quickly he’d lose his luckbox winnings.

Anyway, im looking forward to it, and hopefully there will be some juicy cash games on offer. If you’ve never been to Dust Till Dawn you should, it really is a well run club, and if any of you are planning on attending, drop me a bell here and we can meet up for a beer.

Good luck at the tables, Johnny.

Cant complain though, Ive been running pretty good lately, and hands like the above one happen all the time. You just need to train your mind not to tilt, which thankfully, ive done.

Haven’t played much so far for October, so on Saturday I decided to put in a ‘marathon’ session. I say marathon, I played for 6 hours, which for me is a marathon session. Hahaha. I played Saturday lunchtime (GMT) and the games were sick soft, so im definitely going to try to play more around this time. In fact, that reminds me of a post I should make about the factors to consider to find the softest games. It makes a BIG difference to your P&L. Watch this space! Anyway, the net result of the session was +$1400, I was ok with that, amusingly, it all came in the last 30mins or so, but that’s pretty standard, poker can be pretty high varience in the short term, big winning player or not.

Tonight, im doing some 1to1 poker coaching with a student of mine who lives up in Scotland, he’s already a pretty sound player, but with some guidance, im certain he can be beating much bigger games. Maybe I’ll get him to post a testamonial or something on here. I actually met him at a poker festival we both qualified into about 2 years ago. We got chatting and it turned out we both faced off against each other nightly back in the days when I used to mass multitable £10 Single Table Tournaments! We’ve both come a long way since. Its also pretty interesting in that he works as a Police Officer, whereas im in Banking, it just shows all backgrounds can compete at a good standard when it comes to poker. Its all about applying proven techniques – just follow this blog, and you’re more than half way there already…
